Something new is coming to Mother Lode Rugby this season — and it’s built just for our youngest ruggers.
We’re launching an in-house U8 flag rugby league: four teams, all Mother Lode, playing every Sunday at 3:30 PM at Oak Ridge High School. Each Sunday starts with a 40-minute practice, then rolls straight into a 20-minute game. One stop, one afternoon, done.
No travel. Every game is a home game.
What Is Flag Rugby?
Flag rugby has everything kids love about rugby — the running, the passing, the teamwork, the tries — with no tackling. Instead of bringing a runner down, defenders pull a flag from the ball carrier’s belt. It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s the perfect first team sport: kids build coordination, confidence, and friendships in a safe, non-contact environment.
Why Families Love It
- One day a week: Sundays at Oak Ridge High School — practice and game back-to-back, about an hour total.
- Zero travel: all four teams are Mother Lode teams, so every game is local.
- Real rugby skills: passing, catching, running, spacing, and teamwork — the same fundamentals our tackle teams build on.
- No experience needed: most U8 players are brand new to rugby, and that’s exactly who this league is for.
Who Can Play
The league is coed — boys and girls ages 6–7 play together.
We Need 40 Players — Spread the Word!
To launch four full teams, we need 40 players signed up — and that’s where you come in. Know a 6- or 7-year-old who would love this? Invite their friends, classmates, and teammates from other sports. Soccer, basketball, and flag football players all make great little ruggers, and no experience is necessary. The more kids who give it a try, the better the league will be for everyone.
How to Sign Up
Registration is the same process as every other age group — and the same early-bird deal applies: register by December 1, 2026 and get a free Mother Lode Rugby t-shirt. Head to our registration page to sign up.
